The short answer to how do sweepstakes casinos make money is Gold Coin sales. Operators sell Gold Coin packages and pay part of that money back as Sweeps Coin prizes. The operator keeps what remains after prizes, marketing, taxes and running costs.

One operator’s accounts show the split. VGW, a large operator that files accounts in Australia, reported about $4 billion in revenue for the year to June 2024. Sweepstakes prizes cost it $2.83 billion of that total.

Gold Coin Sales Bring In the Money

Players pay for Gold Coins, which have no prize value. Sweeps Coins are redeemable for cash prizes, and they can come free as a bonus with Gold Coin purchases.

Mega Bonanza spells this out in its Sweepstakes Rules (version 2.0, updated May 27, 2026). The rules say Sweeps Coins are free, cannot be purchased and have no value. Section 3.2.8 says a Gold Coin purchase may come with Sweeps Coins.

Clovr treats this setup as a prize promotion under US sweepstakes law. Mega Bonanza’s rules state that no purchase or payment is necessary to enter or win. They add that buying does not raise a player’s chances.

A Small Share of Players Buys Gold Coins

Most sweepstakes players never buy anything. Optimove data cited in a June 2025 iGB column put conversion to a first purchase at roughly 12%. The same data put licensed online casinos at 51%.

None of the terms Clovr reviewed charge players to open an account or to play. Eilers & Krejcik Gaming put 2024 sweepstakes casino sales at $10 billion, according to iGB in December 2025.

Sweeps Coin Prizes Are the Largest Cost

Of the costs VGW disclosed, Sweeps Coin prizes were the largest by a wide margin. SBC Americas reported the figures from a VGW financial report filed in a 2024 Connecticut class action.

The table below shows VGW’s year to June 2024. Revenue includes both its social and sweepstakes products, and percentages use $4 billion as the base.

VGW item, year to June 2024AmountShare of revenue
Revenue, social and sweepstakes combinedOver $4 billion100%
Sweepstakes prize costs$2.83 billionAbout 71%
Marketing$275 millionAbout 7%
Taxes paid$121 millionAbout 3%
Profit after tax$323.5 millionAbout 8%

A Worked Example of $100 in Gold Coin Sales

On average, each $100 of VGW revenue sent about $71 back to players as prizes. About $7 went to marketing and about $3 to taxes. About $8 was left as profit after tax.

The rest went to costs that the SBC Americas summary did not break out. Prize costs also grew with sales, from $2.2 billion the year before.

VGW kept growing after that report. A May 2026 trade report put its revenue at A$7.3billion(US$5.2 billion) for the year to June 2025. Profit rose to A$656 million, based on filings with Australia’s corporate regulator.

Game Math Returns Less Than Players Put In

Sweepstakes games pay out according to a return-to-player rate, or RTP. For example, a game with a 96% RTP returns 96 SC for every 100 SC played, on average.

Mega Bonanza’s rules (section 4.3) let it change a game’s prize win rates or RTP at any time. The change cannot happen during a game or spin, and the current rate shows inside each game.

Playthrough – the number of times Sweeps Coins must be played before redemption. Mega Bonanza requires each Sweeps Coin to be played once before it counts toward a prize (section 6.1).

Take 100 free Sweeps Coins played once through that 96% RTP example game. About 96 SC would come back on average. That figure is an average, not a promise for any single session.

Redemption Rules Control the Payout

Redemption rules decide when Sweeps Coins turn into prizes, and some balances never qualify. The table below shows the payout rules in Mega Bonanza’s Sweepstakes Rules, version 2.0, updated May 27, 2026.

RuleWhat Mega Bonanza’s rules saySection
Cash prize minimum50 SC, at $1.00 per SC6.3
Gift card minimum10 SC, at $1.00 per SC6.4
PlaythroughEach SC played once before it counts6.1
Request limitOne redemption request every 48 hours6.8
Processing timeUp to 10 days, operator-stated; over $2,500 may take longer6.9, 6.10
Processing feeAllowed, capped at the estimated payment cost6.3, 6.4
Florida prize cap$5,000 per spin or play round6.11
Closing an account under 10 SCNo prize is owed6.13

Each of these rules delays, limits or cancels a payout. A player who closes an account holding 9 SC, for example, receives no prize under section 6.13.

Expired Coins Stay With the Operator

Unused coins can expire before anyone redeems them. Mega Bonanza’s Sweeps Coins expire after 60 days with no Sweeps Coin play (section 2.7).

MrGoodWin and Funrize use a longer coin expiry. Their Terms of Use (section 6.11) expire Virtual Coins after 12 months without play.

Section 4.9 of the same two documents sets a shorter limit. It lets the operator close an account after 60 days of inactivity. Section 4.9 calls that account Dormant, but section 6.11 defines Dormant as 12 months.

Both sets of terms also say purchases are final and coins are forfeited when an account is terminated (section 2.4). Section 7.7.3 lets each operator cap prizes from promotional free plays.

How Players Get Free Sweeps Coins

Free Sweeps Coins give players a way to take part without buying. Mega Bonanza lists its free routes in section 3.2 of its rules.

Mega Bonanza’s Free Sweeps Coin Routes

A new Mega Bonanza account can collect up to 3.55 free SC by logging in daily for three days. Social media contests and weekly random draws add more, with at least 100 draw winners each week.

The mail-in entry, known as the alternative method of entry (AMOE), gives 4 SC for each valid handwritten request. Each request code must reach the operator’s PO box within 25 days.

Referral Coins Depend on Purchases

The referral offer ties free coins directly to sales. A player earns 15 free SC when a referred friend buys $30 or more in Gold Coins. Another 50 SC follows if that friend buys a further $500.

Operators also pay for marketing. VGW’s marketing spend rose from $237 million to $275 million in its year to June 2024.

State Bans Shrink the Market

State bans cut the number of players an operator can serve. The same May 2026 trade report said VGW’s list of ineligible states grew from four to 11 in a year.

Analyst estimates have changed as states passed bans. In September 2025, Eilers & Krejcik cut its 2025 net revenue estimate from $4.7 billion to $4 billion. SCCG Management reported the change.

Clovr’s guide to sweepstakes casino legality covers the state restrictions behind those changes. Verify current laws in your jurisdiction before playing.

What the Business Model Means for Players

For players, the answer to how do sweepstakes casinos make money is plain: operators earn from buyers, not free players. Free Sweeps Coins can still become real prizes, but playthrough, minimums and expiry decide how many do.

Before buying any package, read four rules: the cash minimum, coin expiry, any redemption fee and the minimum age. For other sites, start from Clovr’s sweepstakes casino hub.

Three Sites to Compare

No purchase is necessary at Mega Bonanza, which offers the mail-in entry described above. Mega Bonanza players must be 21 or older. Read the Mega Bonanza review before signing up.

MrGoodWin and Funrize terms say no purchase is required to open an account or play. Both set the minimum age at 21, or the local age of majority if higher. See the MrGoodWin review and the Funrize review.

Players who want to start without buying can begin with Clovr’s no-purchase sweepstakes bonus page.
